Our Mission
Prevent homelessness.
Promote self-sufficiency
and dignity.
In Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal's 2008 Solutions to Poverty Executive Order,
Governor Jindal states that
"the most effective strategies for reducing poverty
are those that help... families move from poverty to self-sufficiency
through effective educational and workforce supports."
Governor Jindal calls for "continuing collaborative effort[s] between...
government agencies, community-level stakeholders, nonprofit organizations,
faith-based organizations and private industry to identify and implement
effective, efficient strategies for addressing poverty."
In Council for a Better Louisiana's 2009 Louisiana Fact Book,
you can find many enlightening statistics on our state.
Did you know that 22.7% of Louisiana's children live in poverty?
Contemplating these numbers might make you sad,
but thankfully more than 2/3 of Louisianians
contribute
to the 1,100 nonprofit organizations working to make
our state a better place and more than 1/3 of Louisianians
volunteer their time at those nonprofits.
